If the mortgage deduction is eliminated, the motivation to own a home would fall, especially where home values are not appreciating. Special interest groups will oppose even the smallest change. It might make it more difficult for the housing market to recover.

You can donate to the national debt on your tax return. Of course, your point is that you would need many more people involved for it to make a difference. Probably the best route is to support groups that have the same goals as you do. Or blog about it to raise awareness.

I haven’t finished with all the cuts. They wouldn’t take place this year anyway. If you cut subsidies people need a little notice.

My wife and I are newly married, both students, and the government not only gave us all of our taxes back, but paid us some money. This was not needed. I would suggest cutting a lot of the tax breaks for people in my class (e.g. ~$30,000-40,000 a year income). We can live without cable tv, a new SUV, fancy new computers, and all the luxuries our parents had. At least we can live without them for a few years.

I suggest an ad campaign featuring people like my wife and I saying a new slogan:

“We are newly married and both full time students, but we are willing to give up our tax refund to pay off the national debt so our children don’t have to. What are you willing to pay?”

It looks like a good plan so far, but isn’t the deficit for 2011 1.2 trillion dollars? Your suggestions would only reduce the deficit by to 1 trillion. It looks like some more drastic cuts are going to be needed if we even hope to start paying down the national debt.
